Smithereen Farm

Smithereen Farm, located on Cobscook Bay in Pembroke, Maine, is a MOFGA certified organic farm spanning 150 acres, including 60 acres of blueberry fields. The farm, situated at the end of Leighton Point Peninsula, benefits from the area's unique tidal phenomenon known as the "Reversing Falls," providing a rich environment for both land and sea cultivation.

Smithereen Farm is renowned for its diverse operations, which include managing heritage fruit trees for hard cider and vinegar, cultivating herb gardens, gathering wild seaweeds, and producing a variety of products from woodland fruits and meadow herbs. The farm also features a U-Pick patch for wild Maine blueberries and strawberries and has expanded into oyster and seaweed farming in Schooner Cove.

Led by Severine von Tscharner Welcome and Terran Welcome, the farm integrates a deep respect for the land with a commitment to environmental stewardship and local food production. Severine, with her extensive background in the young farmers' movement and agroforestry, and Terran, with his experience in organic farming and community service, drive the farm's mission.

Digitata Seaweed

Digitata seaweed, a nutrient dense treasure from the ocean's depths, offers a unique blend of rich, briny flavor and profound nourishment. Whether savored on its own or as an ingredient, this seaweed is a powerhouse of minerals and vitamins, particularly iodine, which supports thyroid function and overall vitality.

The Art of Harvesting Seaweed

Harvesting seaweed is a harmonious ritual with the ocean’s rhythms, carried out with deep respect for the tides and the life they nurture. At the break of dawn, foragers approach the shoreline, where the sea kisses the land, timing their harvests with the low tide. Each frond is carefully hand-cut, ensuring that the plant can regrow and continue its essential role in the marine ecosystem.
